Not rhubarb definitely. Possibly a leaf beet or chard that is running to seed.

There is a variety of chard that is sometimes known as rhubarb chard because it can have red stems. This might have caused some confusion possibly?

Looks like sorrel to me.  Get your money back.

Rhubarb is best grown from a crown.  If you don't have a friend with an old plant that needs dividing you'll be able to buy them from a nursery or garden centre.

  • Thanks guys. Amazon seed buying is not advised. ???? Just bought a few crowns from a more trustworthy souce. Shame because I have left these plants to grow since last summer. Waste of time and effort. Never mind. I will try again with my first rhubarb crop.

    cheers

If you plant them now (a yard apart, with as much muck as you can lay your hands on underneath them) they will grow and produce lots of leaves this year.  Water them well and keep adding muck but don't pull any stalks.

Next year you might pull one or two sticks per plant if they look like they can stand it.

    What variety(ies) have you got?

  • Rhubarb 'Champagne'. From TM. No idea if good selection or not.

Appreciate the the tips. Left these rogue plants alone on the premise that they would be ready for pulling a year after planting. doh.

    thanks Steve.

Champagne is the standard variety.  Good thick and tasty stalks; no problems.  Doesn't crop very early though - you probably won't get any till April.  If you can get hold of a crown or two of Timperley Early you'll have it in March when there's nothing else for pud. And you can force one crown (a different one each year) to get it even earlier.

Roast it, with marmalade; don't stew it.

Same here scroggin, I bought my seed from Amazon, sown one year, picked the next, that was three years ago and they now have crowns easliy as big as you would buy.

Some people can't afford to buy several fully grown plants. Seeds are very good idea.

I wonder if the OP sowed his seeds in a warm greenhouse, or tried to sow them straight outside and only weeds have sprung up. You cannot mistake a rhubarb seed.
