Liquid leaking from tree

I have a Styrax Japonica tree, small holes have appeared in its bark, from these holes a liquid is dripping down the tree trunk and onto parts of my garden, it is almost like water, what could this be, and what could be the reason that this is happening?

It's sap Alan. What's causing the holes is of more concern.

  • Thanks for your reply Dave, the holes are up to 4 In number in each part where they appear on the tree, we thought that maybe they could be caused by a woodpecker which we do have in our garden but why would it just be on one tree, also the leakage is very runny and we thought sap would be more sticky

Sap is runny, like water. Resin from pine trees is thick and sticky.

  • Thanks for the info Daryl2, we will have to investigate further as to what is causing so much sap to leak from the tree.

Maybe styrax is a soft wood that the woodpeckers find easier to drill into.

  • Thanks for your comment, the holes are so regular in size and space whatever is making them must be using a ruler!!
