rosemummyrosemummy Posts: 2,010

Hi I sowed lots of seeds most done/doing ok, just unsure what to do with my carrots, I have 4 seedlings pricked out in pots out during day covered at night, what should I do next? Also, a few of my other seedlings, mostly stocks, that have been pricked out and are in coldframe or outside in sheltered spot, look a bit pale, any advice welcome thanks in advance

Light leaved stocks develop into double flower forms, darker leaves into singles. Commercial growers drop the temperature to induce this, and pick out the doubles.

I'm not sure about pricking out carrots, I always thought it is best to direct sow where you want them and then thin to a few inches apart. Anything with tap roots like carrots does not like transplanting.

Absolutely.  Ordinary long carrots should be sown where you want them to grow, as thinly as possible (about one per inch) to avoid the need to thin.  Thinning releases the carroty smell which attracts the carrot fly.  Wait till they get to finger size and pull alternate ones; the others can be left to grow bigger.

Round-rooted carrots can be sown in groups of three or four in modules which are then planted out as a group and pulled together.
