Hints on growing Dianthus, please

Last year I planted some Dianthus "Memories".  They flowered well, but then the stems started going white and the leaves shrivelled.  So i cut them back, but although they had a second flush, the flowers were rather tatty.  This spring they still looked awful so I've got rid of them.

I believe they prefer chalky soil, whereas mine is clay.  I have just bought some of the Gran's Favourite variety.  How can i improve their chances of survival?

Thanks in advance,

Happy

I grow dianthus in pots - they're very happy in them  image

Otherwise - yes, as Darren says, improve the drainage by adding large amounts of grit to the planting holes and have them in the summiest part of the garden.

It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
  • Thanks everyone.  I will get some grit and mushroom compost!

Verdun, can I use mushroom compost when planting any other shrubs or plants, or is it best used just as a mulch?
