Horsetail/ marsetail

iceice Posts: 332
My neighbours have a bad case of these weeds and last year we had a few runners appear in the garden coming up under a stoney area and across the grass. I kept on top of it and treated with glosphate which generally worked. I only had small shoots and never bigger than a foot high )most where less than 5 inches when killed. Now as some were in the lawn all grass clippings last year were thrown away. So far this year I haven't seen any, I realise my chances are slim but could I have sent it marching back next door? Should I continue to put grass clippings in green bin? Any ideas when it may be safe to use grass clippings? When might I see horsetail shoots?

  • They haven't started to sprout in my garden yet, but they will in a few weeks.

I don't see any problem with the top growth of horsetail in grass clippings, it is only the roots that can produce new plants.

And of course you have to watch out for the strange looking fruiting bodies which spread spores around in the air.

    Beware the horsetail spores!

And these are the sporophores that produce them

    Nooo

Just fed the birds walking back to house noticed this years sprouts of Horsetail. Exactly the same places as last year (can tell by patches in the grass) :( sooo  disheartened. Guess another year of weed killer :( picked these bits out - horrible strong roots :(

Rains also brought lots of alkanet seedlings out too. Why do bother?
