Cardboard mulch around gooseberries?

iceice Posts: 332
Has family around so have lots of large pizza boxes. I'm wondering if I can use them to prevent weeds growing around my gooseberry bushes? At moment I have speedwell and goosegrass keep growing back around them. Is this a good idea or should I just shred the boxes and add to compost?

    Happy gardening

ps when the cardboard is rotting replace with new and then discard old into your compost bin
