Is it too late to prune a lavatera?

Somehow this plant escaped my notice. It hasn't been pruned and I've read that it should have been pruned to 1ft from the ground early to mid spring. By the way - I have read that it is a short lived plant but how deep do the roots go? It's planted along a boundary fence and I don't want the neighbours complaining.
