Laburnum Tree - hole in trunk - help?

We moved into our house a few years ago and we have inherited a very established and rather large laburnum tree, which has forked into three main branches - where all of the branches join, a crack in the trunk has formed, which over the years has turned into a hole, which traps rain water.

We have tried covering the hole with lead, but the water tended to run underneath it anyway.

Does anyone have any suggestions on what we can either fill, cover or patch the hole with to stop the water getting in and rotting the tree?

All help very much appreciated image

That sounds like a clever solution. What a great piece of lateral thinking Mr J!

Thank you, that sounds like the best solution so far. Don't want to lose such a beautiful tree!
