Olive tree

My olive tree is about 6 foot tall in a large square container. I have had it about 5 years. Last summer it acquired loads of little black round 'things' don't know what they were. no insect inside. looked a bit like egg cases but never saw any insects. I picked them all off whenever I saw them. Now it looks rather sickly with the leaves turning yellow.  Please can anyone help with diagnosis and treatment.

Thanks

Thanks for reply. There aren't any black blobs now but I can't remember much fluffy stuff like cotton wool. If they were scale insects, have they gone away or is the tree infected and they will appear again when the weather warms up?
