Talkback: 10 acers to grow

HCAHCA Posts: 129
As a member of the Maple Society I have some understanding of the difficulties associated with selecting only 10 maples to write about. However I do feel the piece lacks an understanding of readers needs and accurate facts. I would certainly not have chosen the same 10 as you. The comment about wrapping in fleece for winter protection is totally incorrect provided they are planted in the ground. You could argue that maples in pots need protection with fleece but in most cases I would not agree with this. I have grown maples in pots for years with no fleece protection and no losses. Many species come from the mountains of Japan and are fully hardy in the UK. These comments do maples a disservice and may put people off growing them. The image of Acer shirasawanum 'Aureum' is poor, the plant does not show any large amount of red in its colouration. If we can help further please ask.

These 'talkback' threads start as responses to blogs and GW newsletters, sometimes quite old ones.

It looks as if the OP was responding to this article from 2014 http://www.gardenersworld.com/plants/features/plants/10-acers-to-grow/4986.html

Apologies for any misunderstanding. The piece refers to the piece about .10 acers to grow'. On my screen the piece is just above were I am writing now. Sorry not very technical minded! aym280 your air layering sounds really interesting, I have never really heard of this being used much for maples. I normally produce my maples from seed and in truth find this easy provided you collect fresh seed around the end of September. I mix my seed in damp compost put in the bottom of the fridge and sow them as soon as they start to germinate. They normally grow like mustard and cress.

Sorry I am not sure what the link is that you would like me to paste?

It's ok HCA. I found the acer article and posted a link above so that it could be read in conjunction with your post. Welcome to the forum image

    Perhaps one for Nora.

I often find talkback  comments somewhat off the wall, as they do not have a link to the original article. Maybe one for the techies to sort.

Good idea fidget - the techie elves could perhaps hyperlink the title text of any Talkback threads back to the original article? image
