Wormery

Where do you position your wormery for best effect? I've had one for years but had it inside my shed, now I want it outside. Is it best in say image morning sun or shade all day? just like your ideas please.image

    Hi, firecracker,

EDD is the vermicomposting expert here.

Look up his thread," Vermicomposting for beginners"

Sorry I can't do a link from this tablet.

    that link should work.

Edd keeps several in different places.

My compost heap is in the shade, because only kitchen waste got added over winter, it turned into a wormery in the top foot or so, it was seething with brandlings.

I think in full sun,it would get too hot in a wormery, but semi shade or shade outdoors should be fine

  • I'm a keen angler and there is a great article on the Anglers Mail website about making a wormery. Might be worth a look - http://www.anglersmail.co.uk/fishing-tips/bait-fishing-tips/how-to-set-up-a-wormery-15455

Mine stands against the house wall facing east. It gets sun from the south until afternoon. I keep a piece of perspex, raised on small bricks, with a piece of old carpet on the top. It stays here all year wrapped with a folded flannelette  sheet and bubble wrap in winter. It's been there for ten years.

Thanks, I'll keep checking on it as I go, but keep them out of direct sun.

In winter mine goes into the shed then in summer it sits on the north side of the house. Seems to work - oh and I put a roof on it to protect it from rain. I lost my first batch of worms because they drowned in the endless rain of 2012. The roof needs to be weighted down because of the recent high winds!

Read Edd's thread - really interesting with lots of tips.
