David......I've thought about the Rhubarb leaf solution and want to try it this year.  Do you chop the leaves and how long do you steep it for ?  Thanksimage

David K: clever man. I will have a butch too.

Not clever really......it was the way of things in my granddad's day, when poisons off the shelf were a rarity.

Hi aym image. Hope you don't mind me making comment on your aphids thread but I have just read about your wild eyed unwanted visitor on another thread.

I am more than a little concerned about your situation. Your neighbours seem awful.

When I read about them shooting an air rifle at your home, throwing golf balls, a strong smell of cannabis and now the strong chemical smell ( which I think you suspect to be "legal highs" ) it is very worrying.

When you contacted the police did they offer any help or advice?

I have never had to deal with problems with my neighbours (they're lovely) so can't offer any practical advice, maybe others here can.

As philippa has suggested, contact the council, environmental health, police etc.

You shouldn't have to put up with anti social behavior that is effecting your way of life.

    Rant over.

Stay happy aym  image.  I love your enthusiastic posts.

I can fully understand why you worry about retaliation if they found out you had complained about them, you have said before they pay no attention to the law or the police.

I'm a townie too and it would be unbearable to be on bad terms with your neighbours so close by.

Maybe see your GP if you're the only one who can smell it aym, can't do any harm to get a check up if your having problems with your sense of smell.

It may put your mind at rest if it's a medical problem and not illegal drugs next-door.

Have any other neighbours complained of unusual smells?

No aym I don't think your gaga, I think if you have genuine concerns you should do something about it.

Could you contact the police on the non emergency number (I think it's 111?) and explain the situation.  Tell them that you wish to remain anonymous for your own safety, being as it's so close to home and the neighbours past behavior with the air rifle.

The various home made organic insecticides [garlic, rhubarb and ecover] folk are suggesting, do they harm bees? I never spray my gooseberries at this time of year as the bees are busily pollinating them and later I won't spray because I don't want poisonous chemicals on the young fruit. Consequently I have to deal with sawfly by daily inspection and squashing the caterpillars. If I could spray a sawfly killer that was harmless to bees it would be very helpful.

As long as you don't actually spray the stuff on the bees it should be OK.  Nothing toxic in there (garlic/oil/a splash of Ecover), and they won't get their spiracles blocked just by visiting a plant that's been sprayed.  Make sure you soray under the leaves as well though.

I didn't do mine before I left home so I hope the sawfly haven't started when I get back!

My Hubby has an acute sense of smell, always sniffing asking if I can smell something.  Some weeks back, he put the wind up me by saying there was an "electrical burning smell" coming from our kitchen, we went round smelling, was it the freezer, the dishwasher!  You would never guess what it was! I had used peat pots and peat disks you soak for my tom and pepper seeds, when they were new, the smell wore off.  Incidentally, when you keep smelling a smell, that has actually entered your nose, the tiny hairs which are the scent receptors, still have the smell on them for quite a long time. We did the Arlington Bluebell Walk yesterday, and the fields had just been "spread", it was overpowering (I am a country girl!) made you feel quite sick, stuck in your throat, shame we couldnt smell the Bluebells!
