Advice on plants

Natalie LNatalie L Posts: 125

Hi all

please can you tell me when I am able to plant petunias and trailing geraniums outside. I bought them from the garden centre when they were small and they have been on my window will for 3 weeks ish and are all flowering now. Please see attached photos. I'd like to put them in a big pot outside but don't know when it will be safe. Thanks

    Still too cold at night

You'll have to wait til the frosts are over but you could stand them outside on nice days to start toughening them up.

That's great, would I be ok to plant out in May?

Last frost is unpredictable here. We've had them in June but that's unusual.

I'd pinch out the growing tips and pot them on a bit

What do you mean growing tips? Thanks

If you pinch out (remove) the tips of the stems they will bush out more. In that first photo, the shoot on the right, I would take off just above the two shoots that start about half way up the height of the flower.Called pinching out because that's what you do, just pinch them off with your fingers. I think as they can't go out yet I'd remove the flowers and flower stalk, that way more energy goes into making bigger plants with more flowers in the future. I can't see how big the pots are but if they're growing quickly you might have to use bigger ones

I admit I grow neither of these plants, so might be a good idea to see what others thinkimage
