Bark chips

Pete.8Pete.8 Posts: 11,340

In 2014 I ordered several bags of Pro-Grow Bark Chips from Creative Garden Ideas.

I ordered some more Pro-Grow Bark Chips this year also from Creative Garden Ideas.

The photo below shows the difference.

The tray on the right is what was delivered in 2014
The tray on the left is what was delivered a couple of weeks ago.

NOT IMPRESSED

I've emailed Creative Garden Ideas and asked for their view.

Will let you know..

I suppose it depends on what they have available to chip up during the year.

But they are labelled Bark Chips - I can't see any bark in there at all

Ok, see what you mean, did you want it for a mulch, I would prefer the one on the left, but not so decorative I suppose.

    Left is shredded bark.

The one on the right is chipped

Same stuff - same label - same supplier

very different contents. I was expecting Bark Chips (which is what it says on the label), same as I ordered before, for decorative purposes - doesn't look very decorative to me image

The one on the left looks like composted bark chips, I often buy those as I prefer the look of them and big chips don't look so great in a small garden. They may have sent you the wrong ones by mistake, it's worth asking.

I'm a fan of bark chip (plus weed suppressing membrane)... Keeps the weeds at bay, those that manage to take hold are easily pulled out by hand, plus less watering is required as it helps the soil to retain its moisture. The bark clip on right will look like the one on the left over time as it breaks up and composts down. Either ask your supplier 'why the difference' or mix it up... rake it in with the other so as the diffence isn't noticeable. Furthermore the right hand one will last longer than the one on the left as that appears to be well on the way to rotting down. Some suppliers give you the choice of colour and size (large or small chips).

    Thanks for all your replies.

I was miffed as they are both the same product with the same label, and plainly they are not the same, so half my front garden has the 'proper' attractive bark chips and the other half look like I've chucked compost over it.

I've had no relpy yet from Creative Garden Ideas

  • Our bark chips seem to attract the local cats who use it as a litter tray... not ideal when the kids are playing in the garden image
