Azalea

My azalea is in a tub and has been doing well each year.  Last year it almost died from thirst as we were away for a while.  It has now recovered but there is a lot of woody stems under the green foliage.  Buds are appearing and some are out.  Should I prune the azalea right back after the flowering season, which is coming now to promote new growth again?

I had a very leggy one a few years back, my mum wouldn't let dad touch it for fear of ruining it!

I have gradually over three years pruned it so not too much in one go, maybe I could have, I didn't want to risk it on pain of death!

It's gorgeous this year, round, neat and covered in buds.

Do you re pot every year, if so put it in ericaceous compost, check for vine weevil, the following year you can just scrape of the top two inches and top it up. Before flowering you can give a fed of azalea,/ Camelia liquid feed.

Teresa you can only light prune azaleas, hard pruning will kill it. Just remove damaged or dead stems, then follow Lyn's advice.
