Bulbs

DrPhilDrPhil Posts: 4

This maybe a silly question but we have put down an industrial weed membrane and approx 5 to 10 cm of bark chip... If bulbs are placed between the membrane and bark chip will they grow and flourish? I have noticed that weeds and tree seedlings seem to grow quite well in the bark. The bark has been down for 3 years, rotting down underneath and is generally moist.

The first year they will. A bulb as you buy it already has the flower formed within it and the reserves to make it grow. Then you have to feed them so they renew the bulb for next year. I think that if you plant without feeding them, they will not flower in subsequent years.

Thanks, that makes sense... however, if I was to feed them regularly after they flower would this do. Although we cut through the weed suppressant fabric for the main shrubs I am trying to avoid cutting more holes than is absolutely necessary.

if you feed them, then probably.

Do you mean you want to grow them only in the bark chips?

That won't work , they need to be buried in the soil about six inches deep for garden daffs,

They certainly won't grow in two to four inches of bark. As well as not growing, they'll just fall over, they must be anchored in the soil.

These are only very small bulbs (less than 3/4 of an inch) similar to crocus (plant size about 5 to 6 inches). Furthermore the bark 3 years old, approx 6 to 8 inches, apart from the first 3 inches the bark beneath is well rotted, moist and compacted at the level intended for the bulbs. The instructions were to plant them at double the bulb size... If I were to do that then they would have 1.5 inches of soil plus Upto 8 inches of very compacted and loose bark on top of them.
