Planting shrubs in pots

Hi all, If I am to plant a shrub in a pot what would be the best type of compost? Or what should I put in the pot? In the past I have just put multi purpose.compost in but within a year found that the stuff has become extremely compacted and dry. Any advice? Thanks in advance

Tiny if it's an acid loving shrub you need ericaceous compost, otherwise a John Innes no.3 is the best. You may need to add grit depending on which shrub it is.
