I have cleared the back of my garden of nettles (they been there for some years)I am now wanting to use this space what can I put down to stop them coming back as I believe that they have runners.

I'd dig them up. If you kill them you'll still have to dig all those roots out.
There will probably be lots of seeds in the soil after you have forked out the yellow roots. When they germinate, you can hoe them off.
