Planting Out Debate, now or wait?
in Fruit & veg
I am in Devon, but still cold nights (a frost last night) ...I have cauli, cabbage, leeks, sprouts all ready to put in having grown them from seed ...they are in a cold frame and are beginning to go a bit leggy so I need to get them in but I don't want to lose them by putting them in too early. Any gardeners in the South West ...what have you put in the ground ....at the moment I have peas, garlic and potatoes in.

Get them in the open air(not in the cold frame) for a few days, putting them back in the cold frame at night. After a week of this hardening off you should be fine to plant. If a frost threatens, lay a sheet of newspaper over the top of them, removing in the morning.
I am in South Wales, our summer cabbage plants have been in the ground for a fortnight, frost last night no damage, plant them deep where leggy and I reckon you will be alright.
Brill, thanks for the advice ...will try to get them in after a few days of hardening off. Just a shame that work gets in the way at this time of year when there is so much to do in the garden!
