Bad knees

The wheeled toolbox is fine in theory, but the ground is so soft at present that the wheels would just sink in.  Then we decrepit folk would have trouble bending down far enough to pull it free again. image

I have a similar problem to Brenda in that hunkering down to sit on one in the first place is also difficult.  That's why I use the knee-pad / kneeler combo.  I can use the handles on the kneeler to lower myself and push up.

There's a good business opportunity out there for someone who comes up with a solution for us!

  • I agree scroggin - leaning forward from a stool at an unnatural angle is far worse than kneeling for a short time.

If the gods hadn't meant us to kneel, they wouldn't have given us bendable hips, knees and ankles .............

I've also overbalanced when sat on one of the reversible kneeler/stool jobbies.  The limited mobility of my knees meant I knew it was happening but I was unable to prevent the slow, stately roll backwards onto the lawn.  There I was laying on my back with my feet in the air, unable to get up.  Unable to get up not because of any pain or discomfort, but because I was giggling like a fool!  Fortunately we have a fairly enclosed garden so at least there wasn't an audience.

My right knee has started given trouble, had a skiing accident when in my 30s. But I'm still at the ordinary kneeling pad stage. Tried knee pads but the straps cut in the back of my knees, as someone has already said.

But I know that sitting and leaning forward and down to weed is really bad for my back. Tried it, never will again. I'm surprised it has been recommended. Also the wheels and the general bulk make that piece of kit totally impractical.

Did a load of kneeling yesterday and am now at work staggering about with hot, swollen and red knees. I think also my weight has crept upwards over the last few years so all of that has to come off. I know the knees hurt so much more when I am carrying extra poundage :-/

Sometimes I sit on an upturned bucket for weeding....works OK sometimes as long as the  patch of weeds is close at hand.

Re kneepads:  I don't find the straps at the back uncomfortable at all.  The pair I have has two elasticated adjustable straps one above the knee bend and one below.  I think they work fine.

Based in Sussex, I garden to encourage as many birds to my garden as possible.
