Bark or slate
Hi all, After some advice if I may to help my war on weeds. In each corner of my front lawn I have a flower bed about 2.5 - 3sqm. In 3 of them I have a well established rose bush and in the final one I've just planted a daphne. For the last 2 years I've been using bark but seem to spend every weekend weeding and over time the standard B&Q large chippings go grey and diminish so looking at alternatives. I'm thinking of using some weed membrane although when we tried this at our last place it didn't like to stay down. On top of that I've been thinking either slate or bark. Slate I'm thinking of as being more cost effective over time as it should need replacing or diminish like that bark. If I were to go for bark I'm thinking of trying something like the B&Q softwood red chippings as I like that 'Augusta' look but again I guess these will still degrade in time and possibly lose their colour. Any tips out there please and whether the roses and daphne will disagree with either. Thanks

without the membrane you would still need to weed between the slate also

I like the look of bark, but the blackbirds make such a mess tuning it over and looking for worms. Most of the bark lands on the path or lawn!
Ok just looked at the price of gravel and it seems I would need a bulk bag for each of my 4 beds at a depth of 50mm so probably too expensive and will look at going for the redwood chippings I think.
Just the decision now of whether to bother with membrane or not
