Sowing seed help

Newbee3Newbee3 Posts: 29

i sowed loads of different perennial seeds mid to late March in seed trays with lids and put them in outside plastic greenhouses. I've missed them around twice a week but hardly seen anything grow.

The greenhouses are in full sun in the mornings then full shade from 11am

am I doing anything wrong? Or am I impatient and seedlings take longer than 14-21 days to show anything

Hi Newbee - you don't say what species of plant you are sowing. Perennials generally take longer to germinate than annuals so you may need to give them more time.

Also some plants whether annuals biennials or perennials need light to germinate while others need burying in the growing medium. I'm assuming also that you are keeping to the preferred moisture requirements of each species. The seed packet should provide a general guide to help you.

Lastly could you move your greenhouses so they receive more sunlight in order to warm the growing medium? This might help to improve germination rates. some seeds can be erratic in germinating even when ideal conditions are provided. Don't give up image

  • Did you use seedling compost? Did you soak it first before putting your seeds in? Have you kept your seeds moist (not let them dry?) Don't give up, they will come through, this is how our planet has survived for millions of years - you never see a weed die do you? LOL!
