Sad Lawn

I have a small lawn but I have a lot of moss in it this year, so I treated it with moss feed and weedkiller I racked out the dead moss but my lawn looks bare.I just wondered If I should dig over that bad area and  throw some seed compost over it with grass seed.

    Have you aerated?

If not, I would do so to relieve compaction , then re-seed the area.
  • Maybe a bit early to sow seeds we had a frost this morning but will tackle the soil which is very wet at the moment

Wet compacted soil is always tricky Arthur. My front grass is the same - north-ish facing and therefore in shade a lot of the time. Apart from aerating, killing the moss and then reseeding, I find it useful in early spring to give it a feed only.  This gives the existing grass a boost, along with any weeds of course, but it doesn't alter the growth of the moss. The grass then gets a bit of a chance to 'out compete' it.

You can then use a weed and feed four or five weeks later, which boosts the grass again, but also makes the weedkiller bit more effective as the weeds are more lush.

I did that a few weeks ago - the grass is already a lot healthier looking. image

  • Getting back to my problem I noticed on You Tube in Canada a front garden was in bad shape these men mowed the lawn and put piles of compost down and covered the whole area so there was no grass showing and then they reseeded it, they never showed if it worked.
