Dahlias
in Talkback
I had a few bedding Dahlias last year that developed nice sized tubas, what compost should I use to pot them up?

Any multipurpose compost will do. Add a sprinkle of osmocote granules, to feed it through the season.
I agree with fidgetbones. I love Dahlia's and have quite a few. Fyi, I've never dug them up either. I mulch heavily for the cold season and they've continued to come back year after year. Beautiful flowers, one of my favourites. (I have far too many as it is but can't help buying more and more of them...)
I grow dahlias too, but always dig them up and store the tubers because I garden on clay soil, which is too cold and wet for them, particularly in a bad winter. I have found that they either rot or get eaten off by slugs the minute any shoots appear above ground. I store them and then put them in any type of compost in containers in the greenhouse round about now to get them sprouting. Once the soil is warmer I can then plant them out into their flowering place and look forward to the colour yet to come.
Thank you all for you helpful advice, I let you know how it goes

How 'occasional' Verdun - and when should this start? Can I use seaweed?
Thanks Verdun
