Sowing Seeds

I have various seed packets that say 'sow direct', is this the best way or should I start off in trays? if the former, how do you suggest I scatter? if the latter, is it important to use soil specifically designed for seeds or do you make up your own? many thanks.

If the seed packets say 'sow direct' then that is the best way for that plant.
Do they say 'sow in drills' and give ideas of spacings etc? They usually do.
If not, what sort of seeds are they?
