Bushy plants that will grow in a plant pot in mostly shade

AlxNicAlxNic Posts: 259

Good morning

My neighbours sit against a shared fence (about 1m from our back door to smoke). That area is paved and gravelled, so I am looking for some plants that would grow well in plants pots and mop up/block up the smoke that drifts over . The plants will get some sun, but it is on a south fence and is predominately shady/damp.

Thanks for any suggestions

    Hi AlexX image

How irritating - I don't suppose they realise how thoughtless they're being - as an ex smoker image (a long time ago) I can promise you that smokers really don't understand how far their smoke travels and how it affects other people.  Nowadays I can smell when someone who has been smoking comes into the cinema and sits near me - I would have been so embarrassed if I'd realised that people could 'smell' me image

How tall is the fence and how sturdy is it?

    Hi Dovefromabove

The fence is 6ft and closed panels - I'm not sure about a climber. I put two jasmine in last year but they haven't done well. I will take a photo now and give the size of the pot. Hydrangeas do well on that side but there's not really enough room.

They both smoke a lot and obviously don't like to smoke in their house, I don't like to say anything but they are within feet of the back door to the kitchen and so the door always stays closed.

From the open back door - they sit against the fence to smoke.

The size of plant pot that fits.

What do you think about a bamboo? I wouldn't put it in the garden, but maybe in a pot

What about a small tree? I have a mulberry in a large pot and it does very well. It should reach the top of the fence in not too much time and mop up the smoke.

Try a leaving few buckets of fresh pelleted chicken manure stood against the fence for a few days. Then when they complain about the smell it will give you an opportunity to say "well actually... I am just about to plant something to help mask the cigarette smoke". It may help them to understand...

Bamboo, depending upon the one you buy, may need a slightly bigger pot and will grow above the height of the fence - you may also need to tie it to the fence for stability.

I have seen a willow wall constructed in a space the size of your gap pavers to fence. The willow whips are restrained within a structure of mesh on posts. You ensure that any growth outside the mesh is cut back to create a solid wall of willow. This generally helps with noise reduction and could grow above the height of the fence.

You could consider trellis panels against the fence with climbers on it - this would give you the height, clematis or evergreen honeysuckle would grow in a pot.

I think Verdun's idea of scented plants is good. What about Honeysuckle? You would need deep pots and a trellis. They would need regular watering and feeding.

Lonicera periclymenum Belgica is an early flowering one and Seratina is a late flowering one so you could prolong the season.

Dordogne and Norfolk. Clay in Dordogne, sandy in Norfolk.

I like the idea of scented plants, possibly a honeysuckle - and the Sarcococca looks like it will cope with the growing conditions.

Thank you all for your ideas
