Non-Flowering Wisteria

EmmaP2EmmaP2 Posts: 35

I have had my wisteria on the back of the house - south facing wall, for 4 years now.  It has reached the first floor window ledges and I trim it according to the books twice a year - but no flowers - nothing!  It is a floribunda - but can't remember the exact name, so you would think that it would have flowers, but nothing.  My neighbours flowers with profusion - which just makes very envious!!!  How can I get mine to burst forth in lovely purple flowers?  Any ideas?

  • Is it grafted or seed grown?  that makes years of difference to when it will start flowering. Also give it a high potash feed in August.

Potash feed is a good idea.  Not sure if it is grafted - I am guessing I would see the "join" if it was, yes?

  • Yes, like a rose graft, apparently Wisteria starts making it's flower buds in August for the following spring so the potash really helps.

Could take 7 years to flower if its grafted

Grown from seed plants might take 20 years

Sorry to be the bringer of bad news, but if it's not grafted (therefore seed raised) it could take up to 20 years to flower...

Since 2019 I've lived in east Clare, in the west of Ireland.

Is it making flower buds and losing them or just not bothering? When ours was a baby it would make buds and then they all turned brown and fell off in the chilly Spring winds. I covered it with fleece when cold wind was forecast just before flowering for two or three years and this solved the problem. By the time it had grown too big to cover it had stopped minding the cold and flowers beautifully now.

Thanks for all your replies.  Looks like mine is grafted, but it has yet to produce any flower buds - just leaf buds, so maybe I have got another 3 years to wait before it gets its act together!  Just gutted that my neighbour put her's in at the same time and it has flowered from year one!  Should have asked her what she brought before I got mine - which was not cheap - around £40....you live and learn.  Will try the potash feed in August and keep fingers crossed for next spring.

how do you tell the difference between a leaf bud and a flower bud ?  My neighbours cut our wisteria to the ground 2 years ago a week before it flowered.  I've tried nuturing what was left our side to get it to flower, but assume it's going to take a while.  It had got so big it was growing out the top of a 40ft conifer...

  • EmmaP2 if it's any consolation I waited for a white wisteria to flower for eight years....nothing doing. To add insult to injury the graft failed and rotted and I left the stump to avoid that four letter word - WORK. Well two years later the purple rootstock went crazy. Not the white I wanted but the purple, heavenly-scented one I got.

Thanks Marinelilium - great picture - it definitely gives me hope - just fingers crossed that it will flower before we decide to move house....
