    I was chatting to a clematis grower last week, he said some need micro propagation and won't take from cuttings etc.



    I assume this mean the plant lacks a crucial hormone or something?

    Yes, I have taken some cuttings and hopefully a few will strike.

    Some are more difficult than others to root and the difficult cultivars are best grafted.

    Unfortunately, for every new piece to be grafted, you need a vitalba rootstock.

    Takes lots of time, effort, space, to build up stocks of vitalba.
