Rose advise

Hi, I have been given a hybrid tea rose called Mum in a million as a present from friends after losing my mum last month.

The rose is in a container and I was wondering how long should I leave it before planting out, or if possible could it left in the container?  Does anyone know where the best position would be to plant and how to care for it please?  Your thoughts would be much appreciated.

Hybrid teas are better planted than potted Sandra. If it's containerised it can stay there till you plan to plant it. Best position for any rose is full sun, and planting is fairly simple, big hole add some bonemeal, well rotted manure or homemade compost, sprinkle the rootball with rootgrow and plant with the union below the level of the soil. Fill in the hole and leave a depression around the plant and water with a full 2 gallon watering can. Water every 2 weeks till it's established. Keep it well watered in the summer as well. It'll flower well this year but even better in subsequent years. Oh forgot mulch it after planting.

It is possible to keep a good sized hybrid tea in a large pot for years without its losing vigour. I have had one in a large terracotta pot in semi shade for at least a decade and it obliges with beautiful blooms.

It's obviously doing okay Ceres, as long as you keep feeding and watering and it does well then why not.

  • I was going to suggest virtually the same as Dave above - we planted a rose called mum a few weeks ago - it seems to be growing already. I would suggest immersing the rose (still in the pot) in a bowl of water for an hour before you plant it so it can get a good drink.
