    A bit of both 

    Almost no digging in garden at home but do dig a bit on allotment image

    Aym: Dove is correct, worms come to the surface because they sense the raindrops falling.  Anything that mimics that will have the same effect, hence the more highly evolved gulls have learned how to get an easy meal.  Earthworms along with other invertebrates cannot experience emotion like terror.  Their nervous system is incredibly primitive......and they are food for others higher up the food chain, including Blackbirds and Robins who have also shown abilities to draw them to the surface.  

    Based in Sussex, I garden to encourage as many birds to my garden as possible.
