Old fashioned plants

hogweedhogweed Posts: 4,053

Remember the fashion back in the seventies for beds of heathers and dwarf conifers? Will that ever come back? What about dahlias - a very old fashioned flower which I think will make a come back in the next few years. Any more?

  • There is a front garden near me planted with heathers and conifers, it slopes down to the road and it looks amazing when the heathers are in flower, pretty dull the rest of the time though. Dahlia's are already back in a big way. There are so many different colours and flower forms I think everyone could find one that appeals. I think the next big come back will be gladioli and chrysanthemums.

When I left school in 1979 and went to work in a garden centre, it was all heathers / conifers. Might explain why I have no love of either these days.image

Our front garden is all heathers, in full flower now, and various shades of green and gold when not in flower, we love them.

Always remember my dad bringing stocks  home from the market for the front garden wrapped in newspaper as makeshift pots this would have been early 60s though

I was thinking I'd like some London pride.

    In London. Keen but lazy.
  • I've just bought some dahlia tubers this morning ...... the single flowered ones though image

Remember the Father in Law with his red white and blue design for his front garden, lobelia, allysum and salvias, single flowering dahlias are lovely, look great in the borders.

For me heathers come under the same umbrella as things like, hanging baskets, lavender and window boxes: for every good one you see, you see 100 horrors.

Heathers are all too often left to become leggy and woody and horrible.

I know it's all about their care, but too often they just don't get it.
