Flowers for Shaded areas

AlastairSAlastairS Posts: 42

Hi, I watched Gardener's world recently. Monty had Tellima Grandiflora and Tiarella Spring Symphony - both are happy in shaded areas. I have some shade in my car and I would like to plant them there, I cannot see plug plants for sale online for these flowers - I thought this would be a cheap way to cover the ground. The area is not big - may 5 x 4 metres. Do you know where I can buy these plants reasonably cheaply?

May be I am too late for this season?

Thanks

Alastair

    Depends on the car.

If it's an Austin allegro, in brown with felt roof, then I doubt anything will grow .

Also look for dwarf aruncus- its a great plant.

    Astrantia.

    Helleborus Niger

    Heucherella

    Epimedium

    Erythronium

Stick in a big angelica for height

I created quite a tapestry with these years ago, mixed with ferns and bulbs.

These aren't the sort of plants that are sold as plug plants, probably because most people won't be planting a lot of them in one go. You can get seeds for tellima but with tiarella you will probably have to buy plants and increase your stock through division.

  • I have Tiarella Pink Skyrocket on my wish list, they're a bit more reasonable online but not cheap. Sugar and Spice is nice too but pricey.

I've been googling plug plants a lot recently

I've found most results to be either useless or incredibly over priced.

So I resorted to visiting sites and going through their lists and eventually found what I wanted that way.

I'm not paying 8 pounds for a 9cm plant. Not happening.

Look out for plant fairs in your area. Lots of nurseries attend, lots of knowldgeable plantspeople, lots of plants and more unusual things to tempt you as well as the usual stuff.  Prices usually reasonable, can sometimes get larger plants too. They are often held in interesting gardens and entry to these may be included in the price - generally under a fiver. Makes for a good day/ afternoon outimage

I would like hundreds of tiarella but I can't afford it right now. I think it would cost about £70 to fill the whole space and it's smaller than yours.
