How hard can I prune an overgrown wisteria without risking future growth problems?

    Jesus Christ!

    What's under there?
  • Just the wisteria!

I found this page on the RHS website. Scroll down a bit to the 'renovation or hard pruning' bit: https://www.rhs.org.uk/advice/profile?PID=242

That's quite a plant, and very charismatic.

I'd attempt to save some of the gnarly big branches if they are producing flowers/ healthy.

It should flower next month, so that'll give you an idea of which parts are healthy or not.

Slaughter it back to the thick stems. It will regrow, lots of whippy shoots, summer prune them back by two thirds, then next February cut back to two shoots.

I absolutely agree with Fidget. It will look brutal, but that's how wisteria perform best.

Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.

if you click on the second image, for me it goes upside down, but if you look at the top left ( bottom right if it's upside down ) you can see some lovely flower buds there.

I'd love to get my hands on it.

    Devon.
  • Thanks for the comments, gives me a bit more confidence that I can be 'brutal' with it!

You're right hostafan, some flower buds in there. Maybe wait until it  flowers and then slaughter it.
