Ooh this is interesting. We have a variagated buxus and it STINKS of pee. Its down the end of the garden so we have always assumed that cats or foxes have been peeing on it. Maybe they just smell?
It wafts, Brenda I'm not posh and if that's how they smell I'd rather not choysia smells the same to me too, The buxus was really strong yesterday in the sun I was convinced it was the next door sats one either side. Thi is interesting..........

I would describe the smell of Box as "dusty" rather than cat pee, red flowering currant is much more like cat pee.
Don't you have to get really down close and personal to smell it or does it waft at you?
If it's the former - don't sniff!
I'm not keen on the smell of choisya, others love it.

Another weird one. I've noticed Viburnum tinus smells, but not close up, only from a few metres away.

Some philadelphus smell like sump oil to me. I thought someone had been dumping something in my garden.
White hyacinths and some sweet peas smell like pee to me (sweet pees perhaps)
However I like the cat's pee smell of chrysanthemum and geraniums
and of course, New Zealand sauvignon blancs are notorious for cat pee being a part of the bouquet, though not the taste, thank dog.
