Planting Strawberries

Last year I ordered some Malwina and Mara de Bois strawberries from the same nursery. The Malwina were delivered in late October and planted immediately, but I was disappointed to be told the Mara could not be delivered till March. The Mara arrived on the 8th March and were planted straight away.

I had expected the Malwina to be well established and with the possibilty of fruit this year. In spite of the fact that they are adjacent to each other in the same soil and with the same sunny aspect and have been treated the same the Mara are romping away, whilst the Malwina have been very slow, most of last years foliage is dead and new shoots only just emerging. I will not allow them to fruit this year. Does this indicate spring planting is better or is it down to the variety?

Spring planted will generally have an easier time.

That may well have been propagated in autumn and spent most of the time under cover.

My new additions are also growing away faster than my older plants from last season.

Last year's foliage would have died in any case. You may want to remove it, so as to let as much sun as possible to the new leaves.

    Hi

i have an established strawberry bed coming up to two years old and also runner plants I took last year which are still in pots awaiting planting for another patch at the allotment.

the runners in pots are looking better than the plants however once I get them planted this month I will get a return from both beds.

my new bed is going to be planted through black sheet as the weeds are problematic and it is easier to maintain

i did have a very good crop last year
