Iris sibirica

PalustrisPalustris Posts: 4,307

I grew some Iris sibirica from seed a few years back and planted out the decent coloured flower ones (pale lilac, white and yellow, pure white and pure yellow) in a nursery bed. So they grew and when I say grew I mean GREW. Just split one clump into 8 pieces. I know the rules say not to split them into too small pieces so these are big bits. BUT, now I am wondering if it is the right time to actually do it. Need the room though.

It's usually done after flowering berghill. If you do it now you'll lose the flowers. If you're not bothered then at they'll have plenty of time to settle and you may get a late show.

I would agree with Dave. Most flowering plants, are, I think best divided after flowering.

I divide mine, at about the same time I divide my bearded Irises.

Too late now, it is done and the best pieces planted out. The other bits are in pots. If they flower, all well and good I can sell them, otherwise they can wait until next year. They are still dormant by the way, only just beginning to grow new shoots.

    Thanks.

  • Could someone please help me. I have both Iris Sibirica & Forrestii growing in my garden. Last year for the first time I was able to take some seeds from both plants and a few weeks ago planted them in the greenhouse. To my joy they started to grow but they don't look anything like Iris plants the seedlings look just like sweet peas help what has happened. I have never bought sweet pea seeds or plants so there can be no mix up with seeds.

Irises all come up as a single spear, did they do that?

    Can you do a photo?

Oh and by the way, the ones I split and repotted have all flowered in the pots and grown lots and lots of new roots.

Iris seedlings look like wide bladed grass.

  • Thanks for your replies no they don't look like blades of grass they are tall thin shoots but have little leaves all the way up the stems just like sweet peas,I expected them to look like miniature iris plants. I will try  again and see what happens and let you know and I will let you know what happens with the seedlings already growing
