Woodchip as snail control

Morning guys
is raining hard so now thinking gardening
I have a long deep bed by next door it's backed by a laurel hedge then their veg patch what ever I plant gets munched by snails I spent last year on safari every evening and at dawn (it has been suggested that the neighbour dispatches under the hedge but surely not
) any way I've had a thought if I mulched thickly with woodchip instead of compost could this deter them ?

If you soak it in garlic it could deter them.

Not sure woodchip would have the desired effect, but have used pine needles with some success,
I must say that living near a pine forest helps for me.
