My pond is looking pretty established by now and the weather has been glorious and dry for a fortnight. I found that the water level dropped dramatically especially when it was hot and windy so I have left a hose pipe dripping to keep the level up while I am away.
My tadpoles have thinned out considerably but I have a whole host of other beasties, including what I think are dragonfly nymphs, in residence. During this heatwave I have spent far too much time on my tummy simply observing, but I'm loving it.
Hi I have noticed quit a fair bit of string algae in my little pond,a lot on bottom of pond and around plants,the water is pretty clear though,and the tadpoles I got from my sister will have been in there 2 weeks now and seem to be doing ok,there legs are forming any way what wanted to know is,should I try take some of that algae out,or should I leave it?My pond is only a container type about 2 foot across and 18 inches deep,just dont want the algae to take over!
Sorry Wendy, just seen your post. Sounds like blanket weed. I have it too, amazing how quickly it spreads when the weather is warm. I have a stool I sit on and a long cane which I use to remove the weed. I make the cane go in small circles winding up the weed the dump it at the side of the pond for any wildlife to find their way back into the water. (OH says I look like a garden gnome fishing ?
There are chemicals to control it or barley straw but I am trying to do without hoping a balance will be reached naturally.
Only a few tadpoles left ?. I think they are being eaten. They grow back legs then disappear. I've not seen a single baby frog. Still, this is a long term project so I'll keep trying!
Blanket weed is a pest, but the more critters you have in the pond the more it will all start to balance out. I find the daphnia do a good job of eating the blanket weed, as do tadpoles.

Esspee, i wondred the same with our tadpoles, but ive noticed that as soon as they get legs and are abke to get out of the water they go and hide in the grass or flowerbeds, i guess so they are less vulnerable to predators hanging around the pond. So yiurs might just be hiding Until theyre bigger.

We got some pond snails online last year. Not had any blanket weed since
