Apple trees

About 3 years ago we planted 6 eating apple pips - thinking that we would be extremely lucky if any of them germinated - but initially 4 did - & now we still have 3 of them which are approx. 18" - 24" tall. My question is how long before they produce fruit?  We have planted two of the little trees in soil & one is still in a big plastic pot.

Could be any time from when they are about 5 years old.  However, you will have to cross your fingers that they are nice to eat as apples don't come true from seed and the vast majority will turn out to be like crabapples as that is the most likely thing that the bees cross-polinated them with.  You could be lucky and get a new variety though. image

A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.
  • Thanks for all the advice & we shall just have to wait and see what happens with these little apple trees - I must take more photos! Good luck with your cuttings aym280 - it is easy to think because leaves have appeared that roots will have been made - I have to stop myself from easing out the blackcurrant cuttings I potted last Autumn because they now have new leaves - but no roots are showing through the bottom of the pots so I will leave them for a few more months.

When I moved into my present house in 2007 I inherited an apple grown from a pip. The fruit looked good, normal dessert size and colour but the taste was not particularly sweet. It was acid enough to use as a cooker though. The main problem was the vigour with which it grew, it would have taken over a whole corner of the garden, it was getting a foot higher each year with corresponding spread.

  • Blackcurrant cuttings - new leaves but no roofs. Planted last November.

The apple pips that we planted about 3 years ago - I potted them on a couple of times before planting them out - they shot up initially, but growth has now slowed. No sign of blossom yet - still a bit early for apple blossom here - but there are some lovely little leaves forming.

The background mess is an ongoing project - for the stronger gardener - shifting stones & soil.

  • All that growth from just one year aym280, that is amazing & perhaps you will have fruits this year too - keep me posted on the outcome later in the year please .....
