Laurus Nobillis
in Talkback
I've just planted a laurus nobillis bay in a largish tub, can I plant bedding plants around the edges or should it be left on it's own? Thanks for sharing your knowledge

I find that it's best to leave it on its own and just top-dress the container with grit.
Plants around the edges just disturb the roots causing suckering and also compete for water and nutrition, and bays are quite hungry and thirsty trees, although they do like the soil to be well drained.

Ok thanks Dove I'll get some grit for top and maybe mix some into pot too for drainage.
Good idea - I use a mix of 3 parts John Innes No 3 loam-based compost to 1 part horticultural grit.
