You could remove some lower branches completely and reduce it's width that way. As Hosta says - they can sometimes give up the ghost if cut back too far, although the smaller leaved varieties like that are usually tougher than the larger types.
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

Is it a Hebe? If so, should be able to trim back once frosts well behind us.

I agree. Try a small bit if you need to and wait to see what happens. Any trimming will affect the natural shape.
