Will a border grow in front of Prunus Lusitanica?

ceri5ceri5 Posts: 6

I want to start dividing my garden into different areas and am thinking of using Prunus lusitanica as a boundary. I would want to plant a border either side but have been told that the borders might struggle to establish next to the hedging. Can anyone advise please?

  • Yes, hedging is frequently cited a problem when positioned near borders. I think the recommended distance is about 1.5-2 metres. Another recommendation I have seen is to dig a trench 60 cm deep running the whole length of the hedge and line it with something impenetrable. I don't personally have much experience of this particular problem, but on the basis that box hedges are often used as dividers in flower gardens, had you thought of using those? Given that role, they might be a bit less prone to competing with your flower borders than some other types of hedging. I am sorry that I don't really know how much of a problem this would be specifically when using Prunus lusitanica--perhaps others can speak from experience here.

I agree with Cambridgerose12 you'll have problems with roots taking moisture and shade, but box hedging would be better if c kept smallimage

Thanks for the advice. I love lavender hedging but soil is heavy clay. Time for a rethink....
