Plant advice for small pots

Advice needed - I have inherited two small galvanised (I think) pots attached to the rear entrance of my house when I moved and nothing seems to grow in them. I am new to gardening, the garden is south facing and therefor get lots of sun. Should I try planting something or give up and invest in bigger pots/hanging baskets? Thank you!

And if you keep it watered, how about alpine Strawberry's?

    They are delicious.

Actually, wild strawberry 'vesca' wouldn't be great in blazing sun, its more of a woodland plant.

But erigeron and many alpines will thrive in the heat.

It might be an idea to try and insulate the interior of the pots from the heat of the metal. A layer of soil and then a layer of thick plastic might do the trick and that could help to stop the soil getting too hot in summer. Of course, it could be that the pots are too small for this and you will just have to go with plants that like to be baked. The sempervivums that darren636 mentioned would probably be quite happy.....I have kept pots of them in hot sun and they have thrived.

  • They are very small - just off to find some sempervivums then! Will give them a go - thanks so much.
