Will my wisteria cause subsidence?

Hi all,

I recently read that growing wisteria in a clay soil against a house had caused subsidence. Is this true? I live in Sussex, and have clay soils. I planted a wisteria against the house last year, so it is not fully established yet and not yet flowering. However after reading this comment I'm concerned that once it is bigger, it will cause problems.... is this a risk in a clay soil? Is there anything I can do (some kind of barrier maybe between the roots and the house?) or should I just remove it whilst it's not too big a job?

Thanks

Roxy

Subsidence due to the plant depleting the ground of moisture?

There are many ancient wisterias on house walls, I don't think they can be too much of a problem

  • Hi both, sorry for the late reply I thought I would get notifications, but haven't! Yes darren636 the writer said the deep root of the plant combined with the cracking of the clay soil had caused subsidence.....

If you are concerned I would move it before it becomes too established.  If you don't I suspect you will worry more and more over the years.
