Unknown plant help

image

Hi everybody. Could anybody help in identifying this grass-like plant from the photo. Sorry it's sideways (not sure what to do about that). The tea mug is there just for a size comparison. Many thanks in advance.

It looks very much like the seed head of Iris foetidissima (stinking iris) to me.

Thanks ever so much Mo and Dove. Stinking Iris eh? What a charmer. It doesn't seem to do much apart from sit there, and as I've been given a rose (scarlet queen Elizabeth) as a present I may replace it with that. At least that should smell better.

Beautiful berries in winter / spring, I like it, even if its flowers are insignificant.

I've got a clump of this in my garden in a very shady spot. The berries are lovely in winter as punkdoc says and I even like the flowers. Small yellow/grey ones but I think they're very delicate and pretty

  • I agree that they have beautiful berries!  They add much needed colour to our garden when there's little else going on! image

I like it - it's very useful to provide a bit of colour in the shade.

If it's happy there it's possibly not quite the right place for a rose?  Scarlet Queen Elizabeth is a floribunda - they'll put up  with a little shade, but will do much better in a sunny spot.

Unfortunately half my garden is in shade from about midday onwards thanks to my neighbour's massive sycamore tree. So perhaps I'll leave things as they are and find a sunny spot for the rose. Thanks for all the advice guys.
