Stopping squirrels
We are in a rented property with flagged back garden therefore to try to create some colour we purchased numerous pots and planters with different spring bulbs. We came home yesterday to 1 of the planters decimated of chewed leaves and bulbs. We are assuming it would be a squirrel as we very often see them running along the fence. This has upset me because we don't have a lot of money to spend on the garden and can't afford to replace what is destroyed. What can I do to prevent squirrels destroying the planters? (I've currently tried putting a roll of chicken wire around/over them.)

I give our squirrel monkey nuts in a container that is quite tricky to get the nuts out of at the end of the garden, then they tend to leave the pots alone as they are too busy trying to get the real food.
Other than that netting.
Chicken wire or netting over the containers at planting time is the only way to stop them. They'll tend to go for smaller bulbs, but don't usually dig deep enough for things like daffs which will be lower down.
I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
traps work
I have quite a few squirrels around my garden and have had the same problems. Over this last winter, after planting bulbs in my pots, I covered the surface with garden grit and to date not one pot has been attacked.
