Magnolia roots

All winter we have been plagued by flooding with relatively light rain, so after investigation we have had at great expense the removal of roots from our drains. We suspect the culprit to be a lovely Magnolia as this is the only largish shrub/ tree in the vicinity.
I would like to ask if there is any way of preventing further root invasion, or should it be destroyed ?

Not sure about the magnolia specifically, but it's surprising how far tree roots go, in case it's not the culprit: http://www.1stassociated.co.uk/articles/tree-problems-in-nutshell.asp - scroll down to the 'Trees and influencing distance' bit for a diagram.
If the old pot drains have been replaced with modern plastics, then the problem should not recur for a fair while. I replaced our drains because of a similar problem 20 years ago and the tree which caused the problem is still there and the drains are still free from roots. It is much harder for them to force their way into the joints in a plastic pipe and the joints are further apart.
