Fern growth

Hi all, Does anyone know when deciduous ferns normally start sprouting the new growth for this year? My fern isn't showing any sign of growth yet so not sure if it's dead. I'm not sure what type of fern it is. It's one of those commonly grown hardy ones.Sorry!

I have a Japanese Painted Fern which doesn't appear till May and doesn't become obvious until June, so don't worry.
