Soil pollution

Hi

We have just bought a 1930's house with a lovely garden. The previous owners have been burning all kinds of rubbish, including old roof felt and plastics, in the best place for a veg plot. Is it likely that these fires will have left pollutants in the ground that coulds get into the veg and be harmfull

  • You'd probably need soil analysis done to answer that correctly, but I believe if they are present they will make it into the vegetables in some capacity.  If you're worried you could remove the top inch or so of soil and that would probably solve it, although it would depend whether the soil has been turned over (often).

I don't know if pollutants get into the veg but with some they just won't grow. Is there healthy weed growth in the area?
