Creeping Jenny (Golden)

Hi all - trying to plant up a mainly shaded bed near the house and wondered about Golden Creeping Jenny (Lysimachia Nummularia "Aurea") as a trailer.

Question is, what's the best way to buy / acquire* it - seeds, plug plants, larger pots?  I'd prefer more mature plants but as long as I get some foliage this year I'll be happy.

Know it's invasive, but I'll be trying to train it down my fence and nipping it off if it hits the ground.  Famous last words...

*I say "acquire" as I know some people see it as a weed, so if there's anyone in Nottingham wanting some taking away?!

I have one in a pot that I've had for years, it moved with me from my last house 4 years ago and spills over the edge of the pot very pleasingly.  I keep it near the outside tap just outside the kitchen window so I can keep it well watered and it's thrived in spite of a shameful lack of feeding/potting on etc.  I'm very fond of the old girl image

  • Thanks both - I should be able to find some Philippa, just seemed a bit weird to be asking about a plant everyone complains about!  Wait 'til my Japanese Anemone question!

I first saw it in Henley in Arden some years ago, my wife thought it was wonderful,so I bought some pots of it, have been trying to get rid of it ever since, it is a thug!

Ps I still have "the" wife!

Pps I am supposed to say,"my" wife.

Not sure if you ever found any Creeping Jenny but my local Aldi are currently selling it for £3. @Rob Lockwood

  • Thanks James S-B - yes, I had some of the green stuff off Dreamweaver and then found some Aurea at a local garden centre - little pot like those ones, now have 4 huge tubs of it!  Enjoy it if you've bought some :)

Thanks @Rob Lockwood . It's a completely new one for me. I'd not heard of it til I came home and discovered its name.

I did a search on here and saw that it seemed difficult to get hold of....and that it's"thuggish".

I'm pots-only so I'm sure I'll keep it under control.

Ah, well James - the good news is that the golden one's less thuggish than the "normal" one, so you should be fine.  It's very shallow rooted as well, so easy to pull up if it gets where you don't want it.  The name's appropriate - it won't suddenly take over your pots - it's more that you'll suddenly realise in a couple of years time that it's covered all the soil without you noticing.  If you immediately want more plants, I'm pretty sure it roots in water - as in, take a couple of short strands off and put them in a small pot of water: new plants!

The other thing to say is that it varies from tennis ball green-yellow to a golden colour, I think depending on what aspect it has - shade or sun.

    Good luck!
